New Schurter DC Filter FMER SOL

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Schurter Logo1.jpg

Schurter presents its new standard DC filter series FMER SOL suited for use on the DC side of the inverter in photovoltaic systems and other DC systems.

Modern solar inverters, that use MPP (maximum power point) trackers, generate disturbances into both the grid’s AC power line, as well as the DC side of the solar module. An AC filter is normally used on the grid’s AC power line, but the noise generated on the DC side tends to be overlooked.  EMC standards EN 61000-6-3 and EN55014-1, however, also put limits on the noise generated from lines not connected to the grid, such as for example the line to the solar panels. Meeting these limits can be achieved by using a DC filter on the DC side of the inverter.

Large solar inverters installed in electrical installations will generally require a cooling system. Components which provide high temperature resistance simplify the system and reduce the energy needed to cool. The FMER SOL filters are designed for rated currents from 25A to 1500A at 55°C ambient temperature, and voltages up to 1200VDC.  The filters are cURus and ENEC approved up to 75°C ambient temperature, with corresponding reduced rated currents.

The FMER SOL DC filters are designed with screw clamps for types up to 150A and copper bars for types upwards of 250A. Other types of connections, such as wires or copper bars <250A, are available on request.  Small adjustments can also be made to the electrical circuit or to the filter housing on request.

Schaffner Type FN2450 Low-Leakage EMC/EMI Filters with Ergonomic Design

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Schaffner 225_31.jpg

Schaffner, the international leader in combining electromagnetic compatibility and power quality, launches the new compact single-phase EMC/EMI filter FN 2450. The low-leakage filter FN 2450 expands the Schaffner product offering of suppression components in plastic housings, which optimally combine innovative lightweight designs with a high level of functionality, safety and ergonomics.

FN2450.jpg

The innovative use of plastic materials and the elimination of potting compound allow a significant weight reduction, in comparison to conventional EMC/EMI component designs. The EMC-compatible HF contact to ground is ensured by a metal base plate.

Integrated terminals in the housing enable reliable contact from the top with the automatic torque wrench. Built-in safety covers, which for the purpose of installation can be easily folded forwards and backwards using a captive swivel mechanism, are provided as standard for protection against unintended contact with live clamping elements.

The low-leakage EMC/EMI filters FN 2450 are designed for rated currents from 6 to 20A (at 55°C) and for single-phase networks ≤250VAC. All versions are distinguished by minimal filter leakage current and are particularly suited for use with sensitive residual current protective devices, as well as for strict requirements with regard to operator and fire protection. The compact filters are UL, CSA and ENEC approved and comply with the requirements of the RoHS directive.

Schurter’s New 5150 Type Filter Offers a Simple Solution for Ghz Applications

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Schurter Logo1.jpg

Schurter presents a breakthrough product, providing simple and universal EMC for high frequency applications, using X2Y® filter technology. Series 5150 possesses broadband suppression properties to 1 GHz and combines them with the most simple and universal power input.  This integrated and compact design provides an easy, safe and cost effective alternative to existing market solutions and opens new opportunities in the filtering of high frequencies.

Until now, X2Y® filter technology is known only for EMI protection in DC circuits. With the introduction of the Schurter 5150 series, the application of X2Y® is now extended to the area of AC power input. The technology is applied in place of X and Y capacitors, typically used in line filters today. It combines the X and Y capacitors into one component, thereby eliminating the leads connecting the capacitors and reducing parasitic impedances to a minimum.  This results in broadband suppression into high frequency ranges.

5150.jpg

The double shielding between the X2Y® filter and filter casing, together with the broad metal flange can serve as an alternative for feed-through and multi-stage filters.  The compact package is designed for front- or rear-side mounting and uses the same panel cutout size as a typical filtered AC inlet. Filter variations include types for standard, medical and industrial applications.

The breakthrough design of the 5150 is the first of its kind to be safety agency approved for use in AC applications according to IEC and UL. It is ENEC approved up to 10 A 250 VAC and cURus approved up to 15 A 250 VAC.  Application examples include equipment for measurement engineering, data encryption, medical engineering, IT and telecommunications. It is suitable for use in office and medical applications in accordance with IEC/EN 60950 and/or 60601-1.

E-T-A Introduces the New ESX10 Type Rail Mounted Variant for Electronic Overcurrent Protection in Automation Applications

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

 eta logo.jpg

E-T-A Circuit Breakers has introduced a new version of its compact ESX10 electronic overcurrent protection product for automation applications. Designed to reduce costly downtime and danger to personnel on production lines, the new ESX10-T is ready for direct rail mounting, singly or in groups. Single or group signalisation is quickly attainable.

The type ESX10 Electronic Circuit Breaker provides electronic overcurrent protection according to UL2367 for 24V DC control circuits and load currents from 1A to 12A: in the event of overload or a short circuit, the faulty load will be disconnected electronically by means of a mosfet in the output circuit of the protector. It ensures selective disconnection of 24V DC switch-mode power supply (SMPS) loads while optimally matching the application requirements.

ESX10.jpg

The E-T-A ESX10 provides active current limitation to 1.8 or 1.5 times its rated current. This allows capacitive loads of up to 20,000μF or lamp loads to be switched on without affecting other loads on the power supply. At the same time, this electronic active current limitation responds much faster to overload or short circuit conditions than switch-mode power supplies: the ESX10 will shutdown electronically a single faulty output, while allowing all other load circuits connected to the same SMPS to continue working as normal.

The E-T-A ESX10-T is just 12.5mm wide and can be mounted directly on a DIN/EN rail. All electrical connections are then made by means of convenient screwless terminals. Status indication is provided by a multicolour LED plus an integral short-circuit proof status output or potential-free signal contact. In the event of an overload or short circuit, the load circuit may be re-activated electronically via a re-set input, or by a manual ON/OFF button. The ON/OFF button also allows manual disconnection when starting up a system or during maintenance.

For processes powered by 24V DC switch-mode power supplies without circuits protected by a device such as the ESX10, an overload in a single circuit will cause the power supply to shut down the output to all the circuits it supplies. On recovery it may go into ‘hiccup’ mode. Costly downtime, scrap and even danger to personnel may result. Traditional protection solutions do not provide the answer. Circuit breakers with fast operating characteristics would be likely to cause nuisance trips during current peaks and switching on of capacitive loads. On the other hand MCBs are too slow, and neither delayed operation nor high performance circuit breakers will respond adequately in this situation to overcurrents. The power supply will therefore switch off completely, bringing all connected loads, i.e. the entire system, to a standstill.
