New Schaffner Sinusoidal Filters Type FN5040/45 Ensure Cooler and More Reliable Drives

The FN5040/45 sinusoidal output filters reduce the extra losses in AC motors and help to prevent premature failures and expensive downtimes. They are precisely matched to the technical requirements of modern drive systems and are particularly impressive when used with long motor cables.

With the introduction of the FN5040/45, Schaffner, the international leader in the fields of electromagnetic compatibility and power quality, is further expanding its range of products for improving reliability in motor drive technology. The new sinusoidal output filters smooth the modulated output voltage of modern drives and provide the motor with a clean sinusoidal voltage with low residual ripple. This largely prevents premature ageing or destruction of the AC motor due to high dv/dt, over-voltages, bearing currents or overheating due to extra losses. Expensive downtimes are avoided, and premature service or repair is eliminated.

The new filters are available in a compact open frame design (FN5040) or as a user-friendly packaged version (FN5045 – IP20). The cable-shield support brackets integrated into the housing facilitates work for the installer and favours savings of installation time and costs. Easily understood application instructions allow it to be safely used even beyond standard specifications, for motor frequencies up to 200 Hz or motor cable lengths up 2000 meters. Both models are designed for rated currents of 4.5 to 1200 A and for networks up to 3x 500 VAC (+/- 10%). The UL listing is currently in preparation.

Applications in building technology (pumps, fans, HVAC) benefit equally from the use of the new sinusoidal filter, as do industrial applications with very long motor cables or with several motors connected in parallel.

Schaffner FN2200 Range is Raising the Bar with New EMC/EMI Filters for PV (Solar) Inverters

EMC/EMI filters on the DC side of PV inverters contribute significantly to the compliance with the EMC directive and to an increased system reliability. With the introduction of the FN 2200 range of filters, Schaffner presents the most compact solution in the market today. It is based upon the combination of innovative technology with years of application specific experience.

Schaffner, the international leader in the fields of electromagnetic compatibility and power quality, introduces the new FN 2200 standard filters for the application on the DC side of PV inverters. These innovative filters are optimized for the requirements of photovoltaic systems and make available, for the first time, Schaffner’s extensive application experience with PV systems to the broad market.

Along with appropriately sized EMC/EMI filters on the mains side, FN 2200 DC filters help to meet the limits of EN 61000 and other binding EMC standards, which are often referred to for PV installations in Europe and other regions. Further, they help to increase the service life of the solar panel, improve its reliability, and reduce potential interference radiations off the panel, by keeping inverter-born high-frequency and leakage currents away.

The new FN 2200 filters require up to 30% less installation space compared to traditional solutions. They also convince with minimum power loss of <0.0008% related to the rating of the inverter and thus help to maximize PV system efficiency.

FN 2200 is available with ratings from 25 to 1500A at 55°C and for voltages up to 1200VDC. Filters without filter capacitors to ground (FN 2200B) are available upon request. All models are UL, CSA, and ENEC approved and RoHS compliant.

Schaffner – Latest Generation Passive Filters for Low Harmonic 690V Drives

Passive harmonic filters are an excellent tool for improving the compatibility of motor drives with the public power grid. Schaffner extends the popular ECOsine™ product range with filters for 690V systems, supporting a straightforward upgrade from standard motor drives to «low harmonic drives».

With the extension of the ECOsine™ product family, Schaffner, the international leader in the fields of electromagnetic compatibility and power quality, is raising the bar for harmonic mitigation solutions anew. The new passive 690V harmonic filters are an ideal solution for 3-phase equipment with 6-pulse front-end rectifiers, like e.g. variable speed drives or battery chargers.

Frequency inverters for energy efficiency and speed control of electric motors can, in combination with ECOsine™ filters, be utilized as low harmonic drives, causing minimum system perturbation. As a result of the significant reduction in total harmonic current distortion (THID) to typically 5%, ECOsine™ filters can uniquely guarantee compliance with the toughest requirements of IEEE-519 and other stringent international power quality standards. Drive and filter combined allow for unconditional use without the need for a costly power quality analysis in each case. The electrical infrastructure is reliably unburdened, transformers are utilized much more effectively, and the failure rate of neighboring electrical consumers is reduced.

The new ECOsine™ filters FN341xHV are rated for 690VAC/50Hz grids like those often used in chemical plants, in oil and gas exploration, or in heavy industry. The filters are available as a standard for diode rectifiers (FN3410HV) and upon request for thyristor rectifiers (FN3411HV). They come in common steps of power rating from 7.5 to 250kW. The compact filters are designed with IP20 rated enclosures, suitable for cabinet integration or for wall mounting in electrical utility rooms.

Barely one year after the introduction of ECOsine™ passive harmonic filters, Schaffner presents the digital solution for the efficient reduction of system perturbations: ECOsine™ Active. Latest generation electronics enable an intelligent and adaptive compensation of harmonic currents with a response time of less than 300 microseconds.

With the introduction of ECOsine™ Active, Schaffner, the international leader in the fields of electromagnetic compatibility and power quality, is taking its offering of harmonics mitigation products to the next level. ECOsine™ Active continuously measures and analyzes disturbances in the power network and provides an exactly opposite compensation current. In doing so, the filter actively adapts to changing network topologies and responds in less than half a millisecond.

The use of ECOsine™ Active supports the owner in complying with the stringent international harmonics standards as well as with local utility codes. At the same time the electrical infrastructure is unburdened, a potential overheating of transformers, motors, cables etc. is prevented, and the pre-mature wear of electrical equipment is reduced. The new load-applied passive harmonic filters represent the ideal solution for three-phase power electronics with 6-pulse rectifier front ends, such as AC and DC motor drives.

As a result of the significant reduction in total harmonic current distortion (THID) to <5%, ECOsine™ filters can uniquely guarantee compliance with the toughest requirements of IEEE 519 and other stringent international power quality standards. Rectifier peak and RMS input current are reduced and a pure sine wave is drawn from the grid. The reduction in current consumption for the same power level saves precious energy and helps to make better use of existing electric system capacity. For new installations, the use of ECOsine™ filters even allows electric conductors, fuses, and breakers to be downsized, or enables a greater number of drives to be powered by a given size of distribution transformer.

ECOsine™ harmonic filters are available in two ranges: one for 50Hz grids (FN 3410 series) and the other for 60Hz systems (FN 3412 series). They can easily be selected on the basis of the actual input power demand of an individual load or a group of loads. Because of their compact package, they can be installed right inside the electrical cabinet next to the drive. A simple plug-and-play concept allows for quick installation, wiring, and commissioning, without the need for system analysis or the involvement of highly trained specialists.
A standard safety feature continuously monitors filter temperature, controls the internal fans, and provides an NC/C contact for the seamless integration into a machine or system control unit.

ECOsine™ FN 3410 filters are designed for 380-500V, 50Hz grids and are available for power ratings from 4 to 160kW. Schaffner Type FN2450 Low-Leakage EMC/EMI Filters with Ergonomic Design

Schaffner, the international leader in combining electromagnetic compatibility and power quality, launches the new compact single-phase EMC/EMI filter FN 2450. The low-leakage filter FN 2450 expands the Schaffner product offering of suppression components in plastic housings, which optimally combine innovative lightweight designs with a high level of functionality, safety and ergonomics.

The innovative use of plastic materials and the elimination of potting compound allow a significant weight reduction, in comparison to conventional EMC/EMI component designs. The EMC-compatible HF contact to ground is ensured by a metal base plate.

Integrated terminals in the housing enable reliable contact from the top with the automatic torque wrench. Built-in safety covers, which for the purpose of installation can be easily folded forwards and backwards using a captive swivel mechanism, are provided as standard for protection against unintended contact with live clamping elements.

The low-leakage EMC/EMI filters FN 2450 are designed for rated currents from 6 to 20A (at 55°C) and for single-phase networks ≤250VAC. All versions are distinguished by minimal filter leakage current and are particularly suited for use with sensitive residual current protective devices, as well as for strict requirements with regard to operator and fire protection. The compact filters are UL, CSA and ENEC approved and comply with the requirements of the RoHS directive.

Complementing the existing series, the new filter models convince with their superior EMC performance, compact dimensions, and low leakage current.

By expanding its FN 3280 series, Schaffner, the international leader in the fields of electromagnetic compatibility and power quality, has made it possible, for the first time, to use high-performance EMC/EMI filters in four-wire technology for higher-power applications.

The new 300A, 400A and 600A models are particularly designed for use in large industrial machines and plants with numerous motor drives, long motor cables, and high interference levels. They can also be used in inverter and converter applications such as Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), for example, or in the area of renewable energy.

The high current versions of the FN 3280 are available in a compact package and with solid copper bus bar terminals, ideal for fast and easy wall or floor installation.

FN 3280 filters are designed for 50 and 60Hz networks in four-wire configurations (3-P+N) up to 480V (+10%) and are available for nominal currents from 8 to 600A. The filters are UL, CSA, and ENEC approved and RoHS compliant.

New IEC Inlet Filters, FN9244 from Schaffner for Medical Applications

Schaffner, the international leader in the field of electromagnetic compatibility, has added two new products to its extensive range of filtered IEC connectors. IEC connectors and IEC filter connectors are commonly used in applications where the power cord needs to be disconnected from the end product, particularly for portable devices or to be able to deliver a product with a country-specific power cord and plug. The integrated EMC filter and IEC inlet component from Schaffner offers a cost effective solution which helps users to attain EMI approvals as well as reducing the number of components in a system. This also offers savings on handling and logistics costs at the manufacturing facility.

The new high performance, competitively priced, Schaffner FN 9244 series offers approximately 10dB more noise attenuation than the existing FN 9222 in the same compact package making it ideal for noisy applications. Medical versions meeting IEC/EN 60601-1 are available standard options. Reliability is enhanced by the use of a saturation resistant core and good thermal behaviour. High differential and common-mode attenuation is achieved and current ratings are up to 15A. Snap-in mounting versions are available to fit panel thickness from 0.7 to 2.2mm and a wide mounting flange option may be specified for ruggedised products, all models are RoHS compliant. The complementary FN 9244E offers the same high performance and functionality as the standard FN 9244 with the inclusion of an earth line choke for additional EMC suppression on the earth line.

The new FN 9244 IEC medical standard inlet filters have been developed in response to requests from our customers for high performance, compact, filtered mains connectors. We have made them the same size as our existing filter range enabling our customers to change from a standard to a high performing product without making any mechanical changes. We have improved the performance of medical grade filters without Y capacitors and employed a new plastic magnetic core which fulfils the air isolation and creepage requirements for the medical market. Our range of filtered sockets now includes the general purpose FN 9222, high performance FN 9233, and the new very high performance FN 9244 where the main performance improvement is at low frequencies between 150 kHz and 10 MHz. In addition we have added the FN 9244E version which has an integrated earth line choke.

Typical specifications include, maximum continuous operating voltage 250VAC @ 50/60Hz, operating frequency dc to 400Hz, protection category IP40 according to IEC 60529, temperature range (operation and storage) -25°C to +85°C, design corresponding to UL 1283, CSA 22.2 No. 8 1986, IEC/EN 60939 and  MTBF @ 40°C/230V (Mil-HB-217F) 2,230,000 hours.

New Models, FN9222, FN9233, Added to Schaffner High Performance EMC Filtered IEC Inlet Modules

Schaffner’s new IEC inlet EMC filters offer small
form factor, cost effective performance attenuation.

Schaffner, the international leader in the field of electromagnetic compatibility, has extended its range of filtered IEC inlets in response to a strong demand for a wide mounting flange version coming from the Asian market as well as the need to have backward compatible products for older models nearing their end of life. The new larger mounting flange offers an increased conductive area for safety and optimum filter performance.

This enlargement of the FN9222 IEC Inlet filter series meets growing market demand and completes the FN9222 filter series. At the same time the opportunity has been taken to rationalise the whole of Schaffner’s IEC inlet filter range by integrating the functionality of the existing FN321 filter within the current FN 9233 series. The new FN 9222 and FN 9233 IEC Inlet filter families employ the same standardised housing and materials ensuring cost effective filter solutions for Schaffner’s customers.

The new FN 9222U features the new wide mounting flange, is rated up to 15A and has the usual options available such as an on board bleed resistor and a medical version. The FN 9222UZ filter also has the wide mounting flange version and includes a metal oxide varistor (MOV) for surge pulse protection.

The FN9233UF2 completes the extension to Schaffner’s filtered IEC connector range updates. It also features the wide mounting flange and in addition includes two X capacitors, one at line side and one at load side. The Y-capacitors are increased from 2.2nF to 3.3nF. This gives the FN 9233UF2 better high frequency attenuation performance.

The new high performance, small form-factor FN 9222 and FN 9233 products share many common features such as rated currents up to 15A, excellent attenuation performance, optional earth line choke, optional medical versions (B type), snap-in versions (S and S1 type) and hot inlet versions (HI type).

The FN 9233 and FN 9233E IEC inlet filter modules have been developed for systems or switching power supply units that require a high level of interference suppression. Compared with the standard FN 9222 filter family the new FN 9233 series offers higher symmetrical and asymmetrical attenuation performance. The FN 9222E and FN 9233E IEC inlet filters also include an earth line choke, for applications requiring the reduction of interference signals on the earth line.

Schaffner Ltd, the market leader in EMC components and test systems, announces the introduction of a new filter to its very successful compact industrial FN3280H EMC filter range. Rated at 200A @ 50°C the new model and has been introduced to meet demands for higher power from machinery and power cabinet manufacturers.

The FN3280H filter range now has 9 models rated from 8 to 200A and all offer 3-ph+N sum filtering for potentially noisy machines connected to low-voltage electricity networks, which may also supply domestic or commercial users. In these environments Class A and occasionally even Class B EMC filtering is required. To simplify system design the filter currents of all models have been aligned to commonly available fuse protection values and outstanding low leakage currents of <1mA are attainable in 4-wire connection mode.   FN3280-1005.jpg

The new FN3280H-200-40 offers outstanding filter performance in a very compact package and does not de-rate under full-load operating conditions. Connection is made via Schaffner’s proprietary “touch safe” terminal blocks that meet EN60204-1 to provide maximum safety for installers, inspectors and operators. 3-phase/4-wire filters are now a standard product and available off the shelf.

The FN3280H range of filters is ideal for machine tools with up to 12 driving axes with 10 to 10m of motor cable each likely to be operated in mixed domestic environments and will allow manufacturers to comply with Class A or even Class B filtering. FN3280H filters also improve the immunity and reliability of the entire system by also protecting the machine against incoming conducted interference from the operating environment. This additional protection ensures maximum productive up-time and lowers maintenance costs.
