Finder’s 67 Series 50A, High Capacity PCB Relay Efficiently Minimises Coil Power Dissipation.

November 7, 2013

Finder.jpg

For applications where high current loads need to be switched but power is limited, Finder’s 67 Series 50A, high capacity PCB relay efficiently minimises coil power dissipation.

The relay has a high continuous current contact rating of 50A, and peak current of 150A (5msec), providing two and three pole NO double break contacts.

Developed for inverters with DC inputs up to 1500V and AC outputs up to 690V, and with a 3mm or 5.2mm contact gap according to VDE 0126-1-1, EN 62109-1 & 2 regulations, the 67 Series satisfies the arduous requirements of equipment designed to meet the increasing demand for solar energy, particularly in remote locations and at high altitudes (up to 4000m above sea level).

The relay is also suitable for use in photovoltaic inverters, battery-operated or portable systems, domestic appliances and for 3 phase motor loads up to 7kW.

The Energy Saving Mode feature allows for coil operation in ambient temperatures up to 85C with minimum holding power of just 0.17W

The added air circulation provided by the 1.5mm stand-off between the relay and PCB aids temperature regulation.

Schurter Components with Elevated Glow-Wire Ratings

November 4, 2013

Schurter Logo1.jpg

When it comes to household appliances used in unattended operation, the provisions of standard IEC 60335-1 have in the past few years placed higher requirements regarding glow-wire ignition temperature (GWIT). These more stringent requirements thus also apply to installed components such as power sockets, fuse holders and connectors. For this reason, all components carrying current must meet the requirements of glow-wire tests as specified in IEC 60695-2-12 and -13.

As a leading producer of fuse holders and power sockets, Schurter manufacturers a large number of products made of plastic materials with high glow-wire ratings. These are above all shock-safe fuse holders in the successful FPG series, which are available in a wide range of shapes and sizes as well as fuse blocks for assembly on circuit boards. Power connectors rated for 10 A and 16 A, including with a wide range of assembly types and various terminals, also meet these stricter requirements.

Schurter thus fulfills and exceeds the strict guidelines concerning fire prevention for electrical devices that are operated in households unattended. Which appliances are considered to fall under the «unattended» category and thus need components of this glow-wire category is defined in standard IEC 60335-2. Examples of such appliance types are dishwashers, coffee machines, washing machines and kitchen stoves.

New Protective Relays from Eaton Contribute to Safe and Reliable Medium Voltage Applications

October 23, 2013

Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton has launched a comprehensive range of power protection relays that are ideally suited for use in the company’s Medium Voltage (MV) switchgear. Thanks to the microprocessor-based design the devices make it possible to eliminate unnecessary trippings, isolate faults, and protect motors and cables, thus offering sophisticated protection for many power applications. The relays also provide detailed information that enables users to better manage their systems, subsequently contributing to a safe and reliable energy supply for applications in utility distribution networks and industrial environments or other power systems.

Eaton’s family of relays consists of devices for a broad range of protection and control tasks including directional and non-directional feeder protection, overcurrent and earth fault protection (OC&EF), voltage and frequency protection, motor and generator protection, generator and transformer differential protection, and power differential protection. These functions partly also include voltage measurement.

All relays have been designed according to the IEC 61850 standard and are internationally certified (KEMA, UL, Gost-R, CSA). An integrated user-friendly status display offers clear data visualisation and intuitive operation while plausibility checks prevent the user from accidently entering unacceptable inputs. The display allows for immediate evaluation of individual measurements on site. At the same time, direct connection with the SCADA system is easily possible via its control interface. As the relays feature analysis and graphical representation of the fault details, fault recording becomes extremely transparent. The integrated non-volatile disturbance recorder registers up to 120 s with 32 samples per cycle. Import and export of fault records can be done in the ASCII and Comtrade formats.

All current and ground current inputs are designed for 1 and 5 A. The relay terminals can easily be integrated into, and removed from, the switchgear enclosure. To ensure safe operation the current connections are equipped with automatic short circuit connectors. A wide range power supply unit covers all standard auxiliary voltages, both for AC and DC. Eaton also offers appropriate software that allows the user to adjust the nominal voltage of the voltage inputs and the switching thresholds of the digital inputs. Besides parameter setting and validity checks, the software supports offline configuration of all relay types, reading and evaluating statistical data and measuring values, commissioning functions as well as error analysis.

The Eaton relays have specifically been customised for the following Eaton MV switchgear systems: Xiria, Xiria E (extendable version), SVS, Power Xpert® FMX and UX.

Finder's Astro 12.81 Time Switch Saves Energy Wherever You Are

October 4, 2013

Finder.jpg

Where the need exists to control lighting, temperature or other functions according to daylight hours, Finder’s Astro 12.81 time switch is an innovative, easily programmable time switch, which employs a unique digital program to calculate sunrise and sunset times by simply entering the location’s postcode with a single joystick. Its newest version now offers added flexibility, with the capability to override the Astro ON time with time-switch settings, thus further avoiding energy wastage.

With ever increasing pressures to reduce energy consumption, the Astro will control lighting, heating/cooling and humidity equipment in commercial, residential and industrial applications wherever sunrise and sunset times are critical in determining operational times, or where stipulated by local or national regulatory requirements.

The Astro’s micro-controller stores postcode data from 16 European countries, including the UK, which together with date information allows for the precise calculation of seasonal sunrise and sunset times. The Astro is also programmable using geographical coordinates, settable between 30°S and 64°N; 16°W and 50°E. The Astro will also automatically compensate, should European Summer Time be enabled.

For further versatility, the output switching can be advanced or retarded about the calculated sunrise (or sunset) time in 10-minute increments—up to a maximum of 90 minutes. A manual override of the output status allows for maintenance or one-off events.

With a 16 A 250 V AC rated output contact and a 120 A 5 ms peak current rating, the Astro time switch is capable of directly switching 2000 W halogen, 750 W compensated fluorescent, 200 W CFL or LED lamp loads and AC15 loads up to 750 VA.

The integral back-up battery, which is easily replaceable from the front, features an automatic power save mode which helps extend battery life.
